The Mini Rugby section at Ballyclare Rugby Football Club plays an important role in the lives of many primary school children living in Ballyclare and further afield.
Currently around 210 children – boys and girls – from Primary 1 to Year 8 attend Mini training and matches every week. In both rain and sunshine, the children turn out every Saturday to take part in the sport and fun on offer in Ballyclare.
Our coaches are enthusiastic, fully trained and Access NI checked. Their aim is to bring the very best out of every child and to ensure that the kids have fun.
Rugby is introduced safely to the children from the age of Primary 1 and as they move up the club we hope to lay down a solid foundation for your child’s future development in the game of rugby.
The player is at the heart of everything we do and this means allowing each child to develop at their own pace. We want the kids to really enjoy the experience of being part of a team and to develop their skills as they grow.
Often the slow starters mature into great players and it is very rewarding for us as coaches to see this happening.
We hope our players will build their self-confidence and determination through rugby while also learning new skills.
Pupils in Primary 1 and 2 (‘Micros’) start by learning important skills like running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching and scoring a try.
In P3, competitive touch rugby matches are introduced. Tackling is then introduced in a controlled environment in P4.
From P3 upwards, the children can participate in competitive rugby matches with other clubs – playing at home and away and also at rugby festivals.
Training for all age groups takes place on Saturday mornings from 9.15am to approximately 10.45am at the club’s grounds off the Doagh Road in Ballyclare. The season runs from late August until early May.
We are a very family focused club. This includes us hosting a popular annual family fun & awards day as well as an extremely well attended and respected mini rugby festival. Hundreds of children from 19 clubs across Northern Ireland participated in the festival last year!
The support of our young players’ families is fantastic. Parents play their part by providing enthusiastic support on the sidelines during games, they help out in the club kitchen and even direct cars to parking spaces on busy match days.
